Accuracy affects product decisions. A “find the nearest café” feature might work fine with an error radius of a few hundred metres. A “dispatch a courier to the exact pickup point” workflow typically needs much tighter accuracy and should ask the user to confirm the location on a map or via an address field. If a business relies on geolocation to enforce availability rules (for example, “service only within 20 km”), it should expect edge cases and provide transparent confirmations rather than silently blocking actions based on possibly wrong coordinates.

User consent is mandatory.

Because location data can reveal private patterns, browsers require explicit permission before sharing it. This consent model is not a formality; it shapes user experience design. If an application asks for location immediately on page load without explaining why, many users will deny the request. When an application waits until a user clicks an action that clearly benefits from location, permission rates tend to improve because the value exchange is obvious.

A consent-first flow usually includes a short explanation near the button that triggers the request, such as “Use current location to show nearby availability”. When the browser prompt appears, the user understands what will happen next. If the user denies access, the application should remain functional and offer alternatives. This protects trust, which is especially important for brands that want to appear reliable and professional.

Consent also has operational implications. Browsers can remember a decision, and users can change it later in browser settings. That means the application should be prepared for permission to be granted today and denied next week, or vice versa. Storing and reusing location in a way that respects privacy principles is part of building a durable product. A practical rule: use the minimum location detail needed to complete the task, and avoid collecting more than the experience genuinely requires.

Use cases in applications.

Geolocation works best when it removes real effort from a workflow. The following use cases are common because they map directly to business outcomes such as better conversion rates, improved operational efficiency, and stronger user retention.

  • Mapping services: Platforms can show a “start from current location” route, highlight nearby points of interest, or calculate travel time estimates based on where the user is right now.

  • Targeted marketing: Teams can localise campaigns by region, such as promoting a city-specific event, a pop-up store, or a time-limited offer restricted to certain areas, while keeping messaging relevant.

  • Travel applications: Travel tools can detect the current city and surface nearby attractions, transport links, and safety guidance without forcing manual location selection.

  • Delivery and logistics: Delivery experiences can estimate ETAs, select the closest fulfilment location, and reduce address errors by letting users confirm a pin on a map before ordering.

  • Weather and alerts: Weather apps can show accurate local forecasts, severe weather alerts, and time zone aware messaging that changes as the user moves.

There are also less obvious applications that matter to SMBs. For example, a services business can auto-route enquiries to the correct branch, sales rep, or calendar based on location. An agency site can show region-specific case studies to strengthen credibility. A product team can segment analytics by inferred region to spot differences in conversion or retention, then adjust pricing pages, onboarding, or support content accordingly.

Handle errors gracefully.

Geolocation should be treated as a capability that may fail for legitimate reasons. Users can deny permission, devices may not support it, browsers may block it in insecure contexts, and network conditions can delay or prevent an accurate fix. A resilient implementation anticipates these outcomes and provides a clear alternative path so the experience does not collapse into a dead end.

Common failure modes include timeouts (location takes too long), unavailable position (no signal), and permission denial. Each should lead to a user-friendly response that explains what happened in plain language and offers a next step. Manual location input is usually the strongest fallback: a postcode field, city selector, or “choose on map” interface. Some products use IP-based geolocation as a backup, but that approach should be presented as approximate and should not be used for high-stakes decisions without confirmation.

From a technical depth perspective, many teams implement a tiered approach: attempt high-accuracy location first with a short timeout, then fall back to lower accuracy, then fall back to manual entry. This reduces perceived latency while still capturing the benefits of location-aware personalisation. Caching the last known good location for the session can also improve experience, but it should be done carefully, as a previously captured location may become stale if the user travels or if the earlier reading was inaccurate.

When geolocation is used to personalise content, it should fail quietly and safely. If location cannot be determined, the site can default to a generic version rather than showing an error. If location is needed to complete a task, the application should state why and guide the user to an alternative. This kind of defensive design preserves trust, keeps engagement higher, and reduces avoidable support tickets.

The Web Storage API.

The Web Storage API is a browser feature that lets web applications store small amounts of data directly on a user’s device. It is commonly used to keep an interface “stateful”, meaning the site can remember choices and progress without repeatedly calling a server. For founders and SMB teams, that often translates into faster, smoother experiences that feel personalised: the site can recall a preferred theme, keep a dismissible banner dismissed, or preserve a filter selection on a product catalogue.

Web Storage is deliberately simple: it stores values against keys (like a tiny dictionary). That simplicity is also its main constraint. It is not a database, it is not encrypted, and it is not intended for large data sets or sensitive information. Used well, it reduces friction in everyday UX patterns and supports cost-effective performance improvements, especially on platforms such as Squarespace where small code injections often power meaningful experience upgrades.

Key-value storage, not a database.

Both storage areas in the API work as a key-value store. Each piece of data is saved under a unique string key, and the stored value is also a string. The browser provides a tiny set of operations to write, read, remove, and clear values. This limited surface area is the point: it is fast to use and easy to reason about, making it ideal for UI state rather than business-critical records.

A typical workflow is straightforward: the application writes data with setItem() and reads it later with getItem(). If the key exists, the value comes back immediately, synchronously. If it does not exist, the call returns null. That behaviour matters in production code because a missing value is not an “error”, it is a normal case that should be handled gracefully (for example, falling back to default settings).

Common key-value use cases that fit Web Storage well include:

  • Remembering UI preferences such as “dark mode” on or off.

  • Storing a marketing banner dismissal timestamp so it does not reappear on every page load.

  • Keeping the last selected language or region selector state.

  • Persisting a simple “first-time user” flag to decide whether to show onboarding hints.

  • Holding temporary form progress when the flow spans multiple pages and does not justify server persistence.

When the stored values start to resemble structured business data, it is usually a signal that the application should use server storage, a proper client-side database, or a platform-native storage mechanism rather than forcing Web Storage to behave like something it is not.

localStorage versus sessionStorage behaviour.

The API exposes two related storage areas that differ mainly in how long data survives. localStorage is designed for persistence across browser restarts, while sessionStorage is scoped to a single tab session. That distinction changes how a feature “feels” over time and affects whether stored state should be treated as durable preference or disposable progress.

localStorage keeps values until the application removes them or the user clears browser data. This makes it a strong fit for preferences and long-lived UI decisions, such as remembering that a user prefers a compact layout, a currency display option, or a default sorting method for a directory page. It can also support performance-minded patterns like caching a small computed value, though caching needs careful invalidation logic to avoid stale behaviour.

sessionStorage is more transient. It survives reloads within the tab but is cleared when that tab is closed. That makes it useful for multi-step interactions where “continuity” is needed during the flow, but the site should reset afterwards. Examples include tracking which step of a checkout-like process is active (when the final purchase is handled elsewhere), preserving filter chips during a single browsing session, or keeping a temporary draft state that should not persist next week.

In product terms, a practical way to decide between them is to ask: should the site remember this next week, or only for the current journey? If it should remember, localStorage is likely appropriate. If it should reset naturally once the browsing task ends, sessionStorage usually yields fewer surprise states.

Edge cases worth planning for include:

  • Users opening multiple tabs: sessionStorage is separate per tab, localStorage is shared per origin, which can lead to cross-tab interactions.

  • Private browsing and restricted environments: storage may be cleared more aggressively, disabled, or have lower quotas.

  • Shared devices: persistent preferences can become confusing when multiple people use the same browser profile.

Storage limits and quota handling.

Web Storage is intentionally limited. Most browsers allow roughly 5 to 10 MB per origin, split per storage area, though exact numbers vary. For typical UX state, that is plenty. For anything that resembles content management, media caching, or large datasets, it is not. Teams building on low-code stacks or site builders often encounter this when they try to store large JSON blobs, long HTML fragments, or repeated arrays of objects.

When the quota is exceeded, writes can fail and the browser may throw a QuotaExceededError. The important operational point is that failure can happen at runtime on certain devices or browsers only. A smooth user experience depends on anticipating that possibility and providing a fallback. For example, if saving a preference fails, the site should still continue with defaults rather than breaking navigation or blocking a form.

Practical quota discipline tends to look like this:

  • Store only what is needed for the user experience, not whole records.

  • Prefer small primitives over large objects, for example store an ID rather than the entire entity.

  • Clean up after flows that are complete, for example remove transient keys after successful submission.

  • Use versioning in keys when data shape changes, so old values do not break newer parsing logic.

For teams maintaining Squarespace sites, quota issues often surface when custom scripts try to cache multiple pages worth of structured content. A better approach is usually to cache only lightweight navigation state and let the platform deliver content normally.

Security: treat web storage as public.

Web Storage is convenient, but it should be considered “readable by any script running on the page”. That means it is not a safe place for secrets. If a site is compromised by XSS (cross-site scripting), malicious JavaScript can extract anything stored in localStorage or sessionStorage. That risk is why security guidance is consistent: do not store passwords, authentication tokens, personal identifiers, or private customer data in Web Storage.

For operational teams, the boundary is simple: if exposing the value would create account risk, financial risk, or privacy risk, it does not belong in browser storage. Sensitive data should live on the server, protected by access controls, and only minimal non-sensitive state should be stored client-side. If an application needs an authentication flow, safer patterns include using secure cookies with appropriate flags and server-side sessions, guided by the security model of the framework or platform in use.

Even for non-sensitive values, defensive practices still matter. Any time user-generated input is stored and later rendered, the risk of injection and unsafe rendering increases. The storage mechanism is not the vulnerability by itself, but it can amplify unsafe patterns if the application treats stored content as trusted.

Storing objects with JSON.stringify().

Because Web Storage values are strings, applications commonly convert structured values into a string representation. The standard approach is JSON.stringify() for writing and JSON.parse for reading. This works well for plain objects and arrays and keeps the codebase consistent across features.

In practice, storing structured state tends to be most useful when the state is small and stable. For example, a site might store a preference object (theme, language, density) rather than three separate keys, which can reduce key sprawl and simplify change management.

A minimal pattern looks like this:

The read example includes a guard for missing values. That guard is important because JSON.parse(null) throws an error, which can turn a harmless “no saved preferences yet” scenario into a broken UI.

Technical depth: JSON pitfalls.

Small state, predictable shape, safe fallbacks.

JSON has limitations that affect what should be stored. Functions, undefined, and special object types do not serialise in the way many developers expect. Dates become strings, and class instances become plain objects without methods. For UI preferences, that is usually fine. For anything more complex, teams should define a stable schema and keep the stored representation intentionally simple.

Robust implementations often add:

  • A version field inside the stored object to support future migrations.

  • Try-catch around JSON.parse to recover from corrupted or older values.

  • Explicit defaults so the UI behaves sensibly when parsing fails.

When those patterns are in place, Web Storage becomes a reliable UX tool rather than a source of intermittent bugs.

The next step is usually turning these primitives into repeatable patterns, such as a small “storage service” wrapper, naming conventions for keys, and a clear rule-set for what belongs in browser state versus server state.



The History API.

The History API gives developers controlled access to the browser’s session history, letting an application update the URL and navigation state without forcing a full page reload. This matters most in single-page applications (SPAs), where views change through client-side rendering rather than traditional page-to-page navigation.

When used carefully, the API makes an SPA feel like a conventional website: the address bar reflects what is on screen, the back and forward buttons behave as expected, and links can be bookmarked or shared without losing context. It also supports better operational outcomes for growing teams because clear URLs simplify QA, reduce support queries, and make analytics easier to interpret across landing pages, product views, help articles, and checkout steps.

Manipulating the browser’s session history.

Session history is the set of entries the browser builds as a user navigates, including the current location and the pages (or states) that came before it. With the History API, an application can create a new entry or modify the current entry so that the URL mirrors what the interface is showing, even though the browser never performed a traditional navigation.

The two most-used methods are history.pushState() and history.replaceState(). Both update the visible URL and associate a state payload with that URL. The practical difference is whether a new history entry is created or the current one is overwritten. This distinction is not cosmetic: it directly affects how many times a user must press the back button to return to a previous step.

For founders, product leads, and ops teams, this becomes a UX and conversion concern. If every tiny UI change creates a history entry, the back button turns into a frustrating “undo” key. If state changes are never recorded, navigation feels broken and users cannot recover their place. The goal is to record meaningful transitions while keeping micro-interactions lightweight.

Using pushState and replaceState.

The method that fits best depends on whether the change represents a navigable milestone. pushState should be used when the user has effectively arrived somewhere new, such as opening a product detail view, switching to a new tab that behaves like a page, or advancing from shipping to payment. replaceState should be used when the change updates the current “page” without representing a new destination, such as refining filters, changing sort order, or correcting a URL after normalising parameters.

Both methods accept three parameters: a state object (serialisable data tied to the entry), a title string (largely ignored by browsers), and the URL to display. The URL should usually be same-origin and should represent a state that the application can restore.

For example, a catalogue view may push a new entry when a user opens a product:

history.pushState({ view: "product", id: "sku_123" }, "Product", "/products/sku_123");

If the same product view later changes a non-critical toggle (such as a gallery image index), it may be better to replace the current entry to avoid clutter:

history.replaceState({ view: "product", id: "sku_123", image: 3 }, "Product", "/products/sku_123?image=3");

In both cases, the address bar becomes a reliable representation of what is on screen, while the browser remains on the same document. That unlocks natural navigation, clear analytics attribution, and stable deep links for sharing in marketing campaigns or support tickets.

One operational guideline helps keep implementations predictable: only store what is needed to restore the view. Large blobs of data in state objects can bloat memory and make debugging harder. It is often safer to store identifiers and reconstruct the view from a data store or API call, especially when records can change over time.

Managing back/forward events.

Changing the URL is only half the job. When the user presses back or forward, the browser activates a previous history entry and expects the interface to follow. The History API exposes this through the popstate event, which fires when the active history entry changes.

A robust approach treats back/forward navigation as a state restoration step: the application reads the event’s state payload, reconciles it with the current UI, and then renders the correct view. If a state payload is missing, the application should fall back to parsing the current URL and deriving state from it.

Here is a simple listener:

Several edge cases matter in real projects. Some entries may not have state because they were created by normal navigation, external links, or a hard refresh. Users can also open a deep link in a new tab, meaning the application must be able to initialise correctly from the URL alone. A clean strategy is to implement one canonical “router” function that can build UI state from either a state object or the URL, then call it from both link handlers and the popstate handler.

Another frequent issue appears in high-interaction pages such as filters, search, or multi-step forms. If every filter checkbox pushes state, back navigation becomes noisy. If none push state, users cannot recover prior results. A practical compromise is to push state only when a “results view” changes meaningfully, such as when a search is submitted, while using replaceState for intermediate UI adjustments. This keeps history entries aligned with user intent rather than raw events.

URL as the source of truth.

In well-structured web applications, the URL acts as a canonical identifier for what the user is viewing. Treating the URL as the source of truth means the application can be refreshed, bookmarked, shared, or opened on another device and still land in the same state. That is a core requirement for content-led growth and operational resilience, because it keeps marketing links dependable and prevents support teams from troubleshooting “it worked only in my session” issues.

To achieve this, state changes should be reflected in the URL in a predictable way. Pathnames often represent major views (such as /pricing or /products/sku_123), while query parameters express modifiers (such as ?plan=annual or ?sort=price). Hash fragments can also be used, but for most modern SPAs, pathname and query parameters provide clearer semantics and better integration with analytics and server routing.

Keeping the URL authoritative also forces healthier architecture decisions. Rather than letting components silently maintain their own hidden state, the application must define what “state” actually means, how it can be serialised, and how it is restored. That discipline pays off when teams add features, run experiments, or migrate platforms, because there is one consistent model for navigation.

Avoiding natural navigation behaviour breaks.

Browser navigation is a learned behaviour. Users expect the back button to go back, not to close a modal one click at a time unless that modal truly behaves like a new page. They expect forward to return them to what they just left. They also expect refresh to keep them roughly where they were, not to dump them on a generic home view.

Avoiding breaks usually comes down to two practices. First, do not flood the history stack with low-value entries, such as hover states, accordion toggles, or each keystroke in a search input. Second, make sure the application responds consistently to popstate by restoring the corresponding view and not trying to “fight” the browser with extra redirects or forced pushes.

It also helps to be explicit about which UI elements are navigational. For example, opening a full-screen product quick-view may warrant pushState because it is a meaningful destination that should be shareable. Toggling an image zoom probably should not. The dividing line is shareability and recoverability: if the team would want a user to share a link to that state, it likely deserves a URL and therefore a history entry.

As implementations mature, teams often introduce guardrails: a routing layer that centralises URL construction, a small schema for allowed query parameters, and tests that simulate back/forward navigation. These are especially helpful in environments where multiple contributors ship changes quickly, such as growth-led teams iterating landing pages, onboarding flows, or knowledge-base experiences.

With these foundations in place, the next step is usually to connect History API usage to a broader routing strategy, including link interception, server-side fallbacks for deep links, and analytics that reflect stateful navigation rather than only full page loads.
